There is a new buzz word on the street. Designed to confuse and baffle the millions of people out there that have just got used to the term ‘The Cloud’. It’s a word that will strike fear into the heart of many techies and will have everyone racing to Google and Wiki to find out exactly what it is. The word is Hybrid Cloud.

Not so scary at all is it? In fact most of you are already using it in a basic form. You could class Dropbox as Hybrid-Cloud in a crude sense. Wiki describes it as ‘A hybrid cloud is a cloud computing infrastructure composed of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability’………whatever…..

There are many products, of which some are really very, very good. One of these is called Egnyte which we will be reviewing shortly. These products are replacing servers for small businesses everywhere, and are cost effective, user friendly and maintenance free. No more £90 p/h charges for your server guy eh?!

You can give access rights to certain individuals such as Read, Read/Write, Read/Write/Delete and create 100’s of users for a small monthly fee.

We will give you more details in our upcoming review, but basically…….Hybrid Cloud is comprised of a cloud server and a local or private cloud. Simples.

We are getting excited here at The IT Guy HQ. No it’s not because Krispy Kreme have opened a new store nearby, it’s something much better! In fact this deserves a drum roll [insert drum roll sound here] …… we are going to be opening our very own Laptop/PC repair drop in service! The drop-in centre will service Wiltshire and nearby counties as well as operate a courier service for national coverage too.

What is the most important thing people are concerned about when they change or move email programs? Their email? No. Their address book? No. Their Calendars? No. The answer is their bloody Autocomplete feature. Autocomplete in Outlook 2010 is the .nk2 file equivalent of Outlook 2007 and older. It stores all email addresses that you have sent to and, to be honest, is quite a handy file to have.

So here is how to do it:

1. Browse to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Roamcache\Stream_Autocomplete*.dat
2. Copy it to C:\Users\[username]\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Roamcache (you may not need to do this as it may be there already)
3. There will be a new Stream_Autocomplete file in there in use by the new account (if there isn’t – open Outlook and start typing in the “To” field to create that file. Then close Outlook again).
4. Highlight the new file, hit F2 and copy the filename to the clipboard. Then delete that file. Highlight your old file, hit F2 and paste in the new filename.
5. Start Outlook

One of the most common problems our customers have is email – great when it’s working, a complete bloody nightmare when it’s not! So many of you have these horrible POP 3 accounts and then link them to your phone. Emails are everywhere, nothing is synced, you plug your phone in to your PC to update contacts – I mean this is the 21st Century here and you’re plugging your phone into your PC to update the whole thing….crazy!

And then there’s the backing up of your .pst file (where your email is stored) or the NOT backing up of it as many of you do. So the hard drive fails, you backed up last week but forgot to do your emails. They are gone. And your contacts.

It will only cost you £33 per year (£2.75 per month) for 1 user login. If you want to share the login it will still cost you only 1 licence. If you are on your own and have 3 or 4 different email domains it will still only cost you £33 per year. However if you want yourself and another to have their own address and login then it will be an extra £33 (£2.75 per month).

You will also be able to sync emails, calendar and contacts with your mobile Smartphone, tablet PC and PC/laptop/MAC and any other computer in the world! Your email will also be backed up and be reassured that Google are looking after you. You will be able to access your email from anywhere at anytime as long as you have an internet connection.

Well it’s been 3 weeks now since we have been playing with the new Samsung Galaxy S2 handset……..and we love it! Move over iPhone there is a new kid in town. Having used an iPhone for the last 18 months I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Android OS. It doesn’t disappoint. The one word that can be used to describe the feeling is FREEDOM. No more Apple nonsense, no more plugging into iTunes, no more hefty updates that slow down the phone, no more calls dropping out and no more battery death after 3 hrs! If you are used to a smart phone then it really is quick and easy to get a grasp of the handset and use the OS. As soon as you switch on it takes you through a very quick and easy set-up followed by your email account (Google Apps for us). Within 2 mins the email, calendar and contacts were ready to go! So easy.

Next up were the apps. Standard stuff really. Android has its own ‘App store’ called Market where you can browse Apps by category or simply search for what you want. The usual apps were installed straight away i.e. Dropbox, Twitter, Mashable, BBC News, Amazon, Teamviewer, YouTube and Foursquare. The phone comes preloaded with a load more as well – one of these being Google Navigation. We were after this little beauty on the iPhone but it’s not available for that, only on the Android. Basically you don’t need Sat Nav – it’s all here! Very good indeed, thank you Android 

The screen is bright and big – but not too big that it feels awkward. The phone is also very light. We recommend getting a case for it though, as the phone is very slim and if you’re clumsy (ahem…) it can easily slip out your hand. Battery life is fantastic for a smart phone and a full charge will easily last a full day and more. Talking on the phone is crisp and clear. The phone boasts an 8 Megapixel camera as well as HD video – very impressive. The pictures we took were stunning and video looks just great too. You can also buy an HDMI output adapter to hook into an external display. The speed of the OS is very good, with instant launch of apps and browsing.

Overall this phone is a worthy replacement for the iPhone and we highly recommend it. If you are fed up of Apple and fancy a change, or are looking at getting a new smart phone then this is the one for you. Our verdict – 10/10.
